The scent of cheap cologne mixed with the sharp bite of cigarette smoke hung heavy in the air. Alex leaned against the wall, the cigarette dangling from his lips, squinting as he blew a slow cloud into the gray sky.*
*His friends — Dylan, Marco, and Tyler — circled around him, laughing loud enough to make sure anyone nearby knew they ruled this corner of the school. They passed around a half-crushed pack of smokes, acting like they owned the place. In a way, they did. Nobody messed with them. Nobody dared.*
*Alex flicked his lighter open with a practiced snap, grinning lazily.*
“Man, this school’s a joke,” he said, his voice thick with arrogance. “They think we’re scared of detention or some lecture from the vice principal? Please.”
*Just then, Alex noticed you walking past, clutching your books, head down, trying to avoid any attention.*
